NO TO POVERTY!

This advocaTEE shirt calls for the creation of a poverty-free Philippines. As citizens coming from a third world country, all of us dream of a better life. But this can only be achieved if we have a paradigm shift, turning from our acceptance and resignation of poverty as a common and inescapable phenomenon to seeing it as a social evil that needs to be addressed and overcome. Freeing the country from the grips of poverty lies in our own hands. Now is the time to aspire for excellence and start our own initiatives to help the country. Our combined efforts will effect real and tangible change. Let us unite to ‘LIFT THE COUNTRY OUT OF POVERTY’.

The shirt supports Gawad Kalinga, a pioneering and groundbreaking movement which aims to build millions of houses as homes for indigent families not just in the country but around the world. Gawad Kalinga has touched the hearts and lives of many supporters, from government officials to celebrity endorsers, from students to corporate organizations. For more information, please visit their website at: www.gawadkalinga.org

QUIT SMOKING!

Smoking-related diseases kill one in 10 adults globally, or cause four million deaths yearly. By 2030, if current trends continue, smoking will kill one in every six people. Here in the Philippines, every year, there are about 40,000 smoking-related deaths. The time to act is now, ‘QUIT SMOKING TODAY!’

The shirt supports the Philippine Tuberculosis (TB) Society, which annually organizes various Information, Education and Education Programs in the country geared towards the eradication of TB. For more information, please visit their website at: www.ptsi.org.ph

BE HEALTHY!

Be healthy and everything else will follow. This advocaTEE shirt advocates for clean and healthy living — in mind, body and soul. The world nowadays presents a lot of consumer products, ready to go food, instant noodles and drinks, everything is done quick and fast. Corporate employees tend to work for extra long hours and fail to exercise. We believe that each one of us has a personal responsibility to stay healthy not only for ourselves but for our loved ones. Let us all ‘EAT HEALTHY, LIVE HEALTHY and BE HEALTHY!’

The shirt supports the Philippine Cancer Society, the leading organization of volunteer doctors and business professionals who are committed to cancer prevention, detection and care, cancer research, palliative care, and treatment. For more information, please visit their website at: www.philcancer.com

LOVE ANIMALS!

“ANIMALS HAVE RIGHTS, TOO!” Nowadays, we see and hear of a lot of sad and horrifying stories of animals being treated cruelly and used for various unimaginable purposes. They are used as baits, decoration, clothing and accessories, food, etc. We believe that animals, like us, should be treated with respect and utmost care, too! Let’s do our part today!

The shirt supports the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), which exists to prevent fear and suffering in animals by working to provide leadership in humane education, public awareness, legislation, shelter support, charitable veterinary services, animal re-homing, counselling, investigation and legal support. For more information, please visit their website at: www.paws.org.ph

CHILD EDUCATION!

‘Every child, indeed, deserves a good education’. Quality education should not be a privilege, it should be a right. Education is the bedrock of national progress for it is only an educated citizenry who can build a strong nation. Unfortunately, for many Filipino children, education remains an elusive dream. The Department of Education showed that only 56.76 percent of elementary enrollees in school year 2005-2006 completed elementary school, down from 58.36 percent four years ago. The completion rate in high school also declined, from 54.14 percent to 59.1 percent for the same period. In the 2003 Third International Mathematics and Science Study participated in by 45 countries, the Philippines was ranked 41st in mathematics and 42nd in science. The country trailed other Asian nations, including Malaysia and Indonesia. Education is indeed fast deteriorating in the country and we must act quickly!

The shirt supports the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan (UHSK) Program of the GMA7 Kapuso Foundation. The UHSK project centers its attention to Grade I students from the most far-flung areas of the country. The foundation provides these children with a backpack full of school materials consisting of notebooks, writing pads, pencils, crayons, sharpeners and erasers to help and encourage them to pursue their studies. SAVE PASIG RIVER!

The Pasig River used to be an important transport route in Spanish Manila. However, due to negligence and industrial development since the 1930s, the river has become very polluted and is considered dead (unable to sustain life) by ecologists. Today, what was once the shining gem of Manila is a haven for illegal settlers and unwanted activities. Efforts to revive the river have started since at least three decades ago, and today, more than ever, we must contribute our share to “SAVE THE PASIG RIVER!”

The shirt supports the Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig Program (KBIPP) of the ABS-CBN Foundation which aims for zero toxic input into the Pasig River, including tributaries, esteros, and creeks leading to it. KBIPP will use a multi-pronged strategy that zeroes in on consciousness-raising as much as physical efforts to improve the condition of the river.
